How to secure your IT environment before logging out. Summer is approaching, and for many people that means a well-deserved break. But before you switch off your computer and set up an out-of-office reply, there are a few important things to check, particularly when it comes to IT security.
Unfortunately, the holiday season is also a time when risks often increase. With fewer people on site and reduced staffing levels, organisations become more vulnerable. It is therefore particularly important to ensure that operations are protected even when the pace slows down.
1. Ensure that your auto-reply and contact details are working
Make sure your out-of-office reply contains accurate information and directs people to the correct contact person whilst you are away. This reduces the risk of important matters falling between the cracks, or of someone trying to take advantage of the situation.
2. Check permissions and access
Check who has access to which systems. Does anyone need temporary access over the summer? Make sure it is set up correctly and that it is removed again after the holidays.
3. Check that the backup is working
Backing up your data is one of the most important protective measures you can take. Make sure your backup is up to date, working properly, and that you can restore your data if necessary. This provides peace of mind should anything unexpected happen.
4. Update systems and devices
Ensure that computers, servers and software are kept up to date with the latest security updates. Many attacks exploit known vulnerabilities that could easily have been fixed.
5. Be on the lookout for suspicious emails
Check your inbox before you leave. Have you received any emails that seem unusually urgent or suspicious? Phishing attempts often increase during the holiday season.
6. Ensure the monitoring of critical systems
If anything happens whilst you are away, it is important that it is detected in good time. Make sure that the right systems are monitored and that alerts reach the right people.
Taking a few minutes to go through these points can make a big difference. With the right preparation, you can reduce the risk of disruptions, data breaches or unnecessary stress – for both you and your colleagues.
