IT security checklist ahead of the summer holidays

How to prepare your company’s IT environment for the summer holidays

IT security Preparing for the summer holidays is an important part of the company’s security work. When staffing levels are reduced, there is a greater risk that cyberattacks, operational disruptions and other incidents will have more serious consequences. By carrying out a few simple checks before the holidays begin, you can minimise these risks and create a more secure IT environment over the summer.

1. Ensure that your auto-reply and contact details are working

Check that your out-of-office reply contains the correct information and refers to the right contact person whilst you are away. This reduces the risk of missed enquiries and makes it easier for both customers and colleagues to get help.

2. Check permissions and access

Review which users have access to the company’s systems. If anyone requires temporary access rights during the holidays, these must be documented and revoked once they are no longer required.

3. Check that the backup is working

A reliable backup is essential should anything unexpected happen. Ensure that your backup is up to date and that you can restore your data if necessary.

4. Update systems and devices

Install the latest security updates on computers, servers and other software. Many cyber attacks exploit known vulnerabilities that have already been fixed by updates.

5. Be on the lookout for suspicious emails

The holiday season often sees a rise in phishing attempts. Check your inbox before you go on holiday and be particularly wary of emails containing unexpected links, attachments or requests to act quickly.

6. Ensure the monitoring of critical systems

Ensure that critical systems are monitored even when regular staff are off duty. Alarms and notifications must reach the right people so that any problems can be dealt with in good time.

A safe holiday starts with the right preparations

Spending a few minutes on your company’s IT security before the holidays can make a big difference. With the right procedures in place, you can reduce the risk of downtime, data breaches and unnecessary stress, whilst ensuring your business can enjoy a more secure break.
